La chanson "They don't care about us" a du être modifié à cause de la pression de certaines associations qui ont pensé que des phrases pourraient encourager les gens à être antisémites.
Michael Jackson déclara alors: "Je regrette profondément la douleur que j'ai pu provoquer à certaines personnes en ayant voulu exprimer mes sentiments dans cette chanson, et je m'en excuse sincèrement." Il existe donc deux pressages differents de l'album HIStory, le changement a eu lieu uniquement aux passages délicats et l'on peut entendre sur certaines versions des bruits choquants qui cachent les anciens mots incriminés. Michael Jackson déclara alors: "Il y a eu une grande polémique à propos de ma chanson. En écrivant ce titre, mon intention était de dire NON au racisme, à l'antisémitisme et au fait de coller des étiquettes aux gens. Malheureusement, les mots que j'ai choisis ont, semble-t-il, blessés accidentellement ceux-là même dont je voulais défendre la cause. Je veux que vous sachiez tous à quel point je suis impliqué dans le combat pour la tolérance, la paix et l'amour, et je présente mes excuses à tous ceux qui ont pu être bléssé par mes propos." Ce titre est sorti également dans un pressage pas tout à fait comme les autres puisqu'il est apparu sous le format CD EXTRA. Non seulement il contient des remixs que tout le monde peut écouter sur une platine CD mais il contient également une partie multimédia qui permet aux heureux possesseurs d'ordinateurs de pouvoir lire sur leur lecteur CD-ROM des programmes permettant de voir le clip de Earth Song ainsi que de pouvoir lire les paroles de They don't care about us et de pourquoi pas en faire un Karaoké.
A noter enfin que cette chanson fit l'objet de deux clip vidéo différents, l'un tourné au Bresil et l'autre en Prison.
